    Shelter House is a non-profit organization that has provided housing and supportive services to the homeless of Southeast Iowa since 1983. Shelter House is Johnson County, Iowa’s only general use homeless shelter, providing transitional shelter to men, women, and children, including the disabled and the elderly.

  • International Welcome Week

    Each September, Iowa City and the entire Johnson County participate in International Welcome Week, a national movement lead by Welcoming America. Iowa City and the entire Johnson County were named a welcoming county and city in 2014.

    Welcoming America leads a movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by making everyone feel like they belong. They believe that all people, including immigrants, are valued contributors who are vital to the success of our communities and shared future.

    Locally we have launched a new storytelling movement called #HearHere. This campaign will highlight stories of local immigrants who are making a difference in our communities.

    The movement in Iowa City is being led by the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, Iowa City Area Development, Iowa City Downtown District, Think Iowa City, Kirkwood Community College, Johnson County, Iowa, University of Iowa, Born Leaders United, UI International Students and Scholars, UI Pomerantz Career Center, FilmScene, and Community CPA & Associates Inc.

Housing

The Housing Authority works to improve the quality of life for clients, acting as a community leader on affordable housing by providing information and education, housing assistance, and public and private partnership opportunities.
