    Mercy Iowa City is an acute care hospital and regional referral center that draws patients from throughout southeast Iowa. Mercy’s medical staff is comprised of more than 225 physicians representing all major medical specialties and most subspecialties.   • UI Quick Care

    UI QuickCare is a walk-in medical clinic available to anyone in the community. It should not replace regular visits to your doctor. However, when you are ill, but don’t need an emergency room or can’t get to your regular doctor, UI QuickCare is a convenient choice open to anyone more than six months old. No appointment necessary.

  • UI Children’s Hospital

    As Iowa’s only comprehensive children’s hospital, we provide care for children from birth to young adulthood. Services range from promoting wellness to the care of general childhood illness, surgery, traumatic injuries, life-threatening and chronic illnesses, and developmental disabilities.

  • Free Mental Health/Counseling

    Psychiatry treats individuals who have mental disorders that are, at least in part, treatable with medications because of the underlying organic nature of the person’s illness. Services include diagnostic assessment and the prescribing and monitoring of medications.

  • Healthy Kids Community Care Clinic

    Healthy Kids School-Based Health Clinic is an extension of health services offered in the Iowa City Community School District. The clinic serves residents of Johnson County, ages 0-21, through graduation age; offering physicals, sports physicals, immunizations, and more. We are a United Way funded, community supported, free medical clinic model. Our mission is to work collaboratively with area medical partners to provide accessible primary, mental health, and specialty care to underserved and uninsured populations.

    Johnson County Community ID is a local-government issued photo identification service available to residents of Johnson County. The ID was established to ensure that all members of our diverse community are welcomed and can fully participate in the economic and social life of our county.

    The Iowa City Senior Center staff and volunteers work very hard to provide a wide variety of activities and classes – a large percentage of which have no fees. You can drop by and pick up a catalog and take a tour and find people watching free movies, working out independently, or in a class guided by an instructor. There is a library, a billiards room, classrooms where you may find people discussing books and literature, philosophy and science, creating art, singing in a choir, or practicing in the orchestra or band. You can sit with a cup of coffee and read the daily newspapers or join others who like to dance. Come visit and see for yourself.

  • The Bike Library

    The Bike Library started in 2004 as a volunteer-run community bike project located in Iowa City, Iowa with a mission of getting more people on bikes. We repair donated bikes and offer them to the public. Bikes are priced with a deposit and checked out for six month periods. If a bike is returned in good condition within the checkout period, the deposit will be returned to the user. Alternately, patrons can choose to keep their bikes and forfeit their deposit.

Clients may choose the items which will work best for their family, with some limits based on family size. The Food Bank provides non-perishable items as well as produce, bakery, deli, dairy, and health and hygiene items as they are available through donations.

    The Coralville Community Gardens offer a place for citizens to lease a plot to plant and grow their own fresh produce, herbs, and flowers. The gardens feature a fenced area of plots with mulched walkways between them and raised beds for those with mobility impairments.

    ISSS sponsors Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) workshops for UI international students and scholars.   • International Welcome Week

    Each September, Iowa City and the entire Johnson County participate in International Welcome Week, a national movement lead by Welcoming America. Iowa City and the entire Johnson County were named a welcoming county and city in 2014. Welcoming America leads a movement of inclusive communities becoming more prosperous by making everyone feel like they belong. They believe that all people, including immigrants, are valued contributors who are vital to the success of our communities and shared future. Locally we have launched a new storytelling movement called #HearHere. This campaign will highlight stories of local immigrants who are making a difference in our communities. The movement in Iowa City is being led by the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce, Iowa City Area Development, Iowa City Downtown District, Think Iowa City, Kirkwood Community College, Johnson County, Iowa, University of Iowa, Born Leaders United, UI International Students and Scholars, UI Pomerantz Career Center, FilmScene, and Community CPA & Associates Inc.

Housing

The Housing Authority works to improve the quality of life for clients, acting as a community leader on affordable housing by providing information and education, housing assistance, and public and private partnership opportunities. The Housing Authority is a division of the City of Iowa City established in 1969 to administer housing assistance programs throughout its jurisdiction, including all of Johnson County and portions of Iowa and Washington Counties.
