Salina McCarty

Occupation: Co-founder of the local non-profit, Houses into Homes. I am the organization’s Managing Director, and am extremely passionate about the work we do in our community.

How I got to Iowa City: I grew up in Cedar Falls, and came to Iowa City to attend the University of Iowa in 2001. I live in Iowa City with my husband, teenage daughter, two cats, and our Great Dane.

Why I decided to participate in the Welcoming Banner project: I was so pleased to be a part of the Welcoming Banner project, as the diversity in our community is one of my favorite features of living here! My family is divided between the States and Malaysia, where my dad and paternal side reside. I have always easily connected to others, regardless of how much we have in common on the surface, and rather enjoy having the opportunity to build relationships with folks who are willing to share parts of their culture and lives that make them so unique and special! It is a gift that our community invites and draws people globally to call our area home, even if just temporarily for some. I’m honored to be one small person and part of that feat.
